Why You Should Join the Society for Military History

society-military-historyStudents who are interested in military history will immediately benefit from joining the Society for Military History, which is approaching its 90th anniversary. This group has a larger focus than the Society for Medieval Military History, covering topics from the ancient world to modern warfare.

The benefits of the society are numerous and typical, which include a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, a quarterly newsletter, and a yearly conference. However, the most recent development comes from the efforts of the society’s president, Dr. Gregory J. W. Urwin, who has successfully brought everything into the twenty-first-century.

For students, the society recently switched from delivering physical copies of its journal by default to delivering electronic copies instead. Physical copies are still available for an extra fee. As of this writing, students can join for $25/year. In addition, members have electronic access to all previous journals through EBSCO. This last aspect is something President Urwin is particularly proud of and he should be!

In addition, the society has an active Twitter feed and blog, all featuring prominent historians such as Mark Grimsley. These historians provide updates on the society, as well as their own research and other topics in military history.

Then there is the Facebook page, available only to members. Here, members discuss the latest developments in military history. Some of the recent topics have included debates over using camera phones in archives, as well as plagiarism and the legacy of Stephen Ambrose. There is also a public Facebook page available for non-members.

That about covers it. What are you waiting for? Join today!
