Once you’ve enrolled into your online degree program, you should create a document with all the important contact information you might need – like the computer help desk, business office, the advising office, the department teaching your course, and the library. Print it out, then stick it on your fridge or on top of your nightstand for easy access. It’ll save you tons of time when you’re in the middle of technology crisis while trying to submit your final term paper. Schools vary greatly in how their Web sites are laid out, but most provide some sort of “contact us” page with links, numbers, and e-mails for all the services you will need as an online student.

After you’ve registered for your courses, log into your online classroom as soon as your able. Try to familiarize yourself with the technology and how the available resources are organized. The last thing you want is to be caught off guard when you’re trying to upload your assignment against a tight deadline.
The best way to get the lay of the land is by touring the primary page which comes up after logging in. In most learning management systems, the first page, or homepage, contains access to the live online classrooms, course assignments, asynchronous lectures, library resources, learning materials (such as electronic readings), and learning classroom support services (such as academic advising).

When you look ahead and think “I have 6 weeks to complete this piece of work”, it is tempting to put it off for a week or too. The further away the deadline, the stronger this temptation is. You’ll need to become a master at resisting this natural instinct, and forcing yourself to get to work. You’ll thank yourself a few weeks down the line when you have made some good progress.

When you’re taking an online class, one of the best ways to efficiently manage your time is to invest in a laptop. You don’t need a laptop to take courses online, but having one means that you can make good use of time that would typically be lost, such as time during your morning commute on the train or waiting at the doctor’s office. Just make sure that your connection is secure. Fit in your classes during times that would otherwise be wasted, and you’ll have much more free time during the rest of your day.
