There will be times when you’ll find yourself at a mental roadblock, stuck on how to complete an assignment. Often, the best thing to do in those situations is to take a step back and stop working on it for a while. Take cues from your body to determine break time.
- Are your ideas getting stale?
- Is your mind wondering a lot?
- Are you feeling restless?
Think about your assignment off and on, in a relaxed way, while you’re doing something relaxing, like taking a walk. Sometimes your “background processing” may be much more creative than your “foreground processing.” In fact, there is research that taking a break to walk through nature significantly improved cognitive thinking skills.

Educators have long noted that one of the best ways to learn something is to teach it to someone else. Remember your seventh-grade presentation on Costa Rica? By teaching to the rest of the class, your teacher hoped you would gain even more from the assignment. You can apply the same principle today by sharing your newly learned skills and knowledge with others.
Start by translating the information into your own words. This process alone helps solidify new knowledge in your brain. Next, find some way to share what you’ve learned. Some ideas include writing a blog post, creating a podcast or participating in a group discussion.

How many times have you’ve been working on a document – shaping and tweaking the words just perfectly, only to become a victim of a power outage or a wonky computer that freezes in its tracks if you have more than one program open? Hours of work gone in an instant. Save early and often. And then back it up! As simplistic as it sounds, many neglect to put that into practice.
Furthermore, for complete and accurate documentation, anytime you send an important e-mail to your professor or post a discussion item in the classroom, send a copy to yourself at an alternate e-mail address, such as an Hotmail or Yahoo account. This will ensure that you’ll have a complete set of records in case something happens to the school’s program server or network. This is critical for assignments due by a certain time.

Keep a diary of everything you do for three days to determine how you’re spending your time. Look for time that can be used more wisely. For example, could you take a bus or train to work and use the commute to catch up on reading? If so, you could free up some time to exercise or spend with family or friends.
