How to Use Pinterest for School

For the visual population there are so many social options to choose from. One of the best out there is Pinterest.  In case you’re not already a member, Pinterest is a great social photo sharing site where members create “boards” and “pin” items of interest into them. You can find recipes, household cleaning remedies, news stories, design ideas, and fashion advice. It’s another way for online students to stay in touch, but on a more personal level, and it can be used as a great motivator in class.

Online students can really take advantage of all that this site has to offer. You can create boards for time management tips, relaxation techniques for stress reduction, and healthy snack options for testing.

What about the academic side of Pinterest? Well, the great thing about this site is that it is what you make of it. Here are my suggestions for integrating Pinterest into your studies:

  1. Pin scholars in your field: Graduate students are tasked with being able to identify the founders and thought leaders in their field of study, and this is a great way to put a name with a face.
  2. Follow academic blogs and journals: The academic field is slowly catching up to the powder keg birth that Pinterest had, so if your school isn’t available then pin the blogs you typically read so your peers can see what you’re studying.
  3. Create a board for motivation: Pin items that motivate you for class. Think of a vacation as incentive, or motivational posters or quotes from your mentors.
  4. Pin your academic books: Create a photographic archive of all the books you’ve read throughout your degree program. It’ll be interesting to see the breadth of topics you covered, and if you still remember any of the content.
  5. Create a board for your potential career: Start pinning things that are going on in the industry, any news topics, trends, and new policies. Stay on top of your game before you graduate, it’ll be impressive showing a potential employer your board when it comes times for interviews.
