10 Things to Do Before Starting Your Next Class

starting-classes-onlineAre you about to start a new class, or continue on through your program? Every class start is a big step toward an end goal and it should be celebrated. In the layover between now and when classes begin what do you have going on? If you don’t have some part of school factored into that time frame then it’s time to get a plan.

Time management is very important for online learners. If you work full-time, have a busy family, and social life where does your school time fit in? That’s up to you to figure out. You’ll have support from your advisor on-hand, but don’t expect to get reminders when assignments are due. Here’s what you need to do in the upcoming weeks, or days, before the start of your class.

  1. Send an initial email to your advisor just to say hello.
  2. Start the process of financial aid.
  3. Make an academic plan that fits your busy lifestyle.
  4. Log into the classroom a couple days a week just to get familiar with the layout.
  5. Re-read the class description; it’s a precursor to the syllabus.
  6. Read some industry publications, and news outlets.
  7. Create a schedule for when you’ll need to read and study.
  8. Set up rules with your family, or roommates, for quiet study and writing time(s).
  9. Double check the technology requirements with your school.
  10. Enjoy your last days/weeks of freedom by taking a day vacation.

Don’t get stressed before you begin. If you’re a procrastinator, try to be proactive and plan for a successful school start.
