Recently, American Public University launched a new education option, MomentumTM, for our adult learners. Momentum is a competency-based education (CBE) model that differs from traditional classroom instruction.
Momentum is tailored to meet your unique educational needs and enables you to finish your bachelor’s program with the skills, knowledge and abilities that employers seek. Other advantages of Momentum include shortening the overall time needed to acquire your degree and potentially saving on the total cost of your education.
The Momentum option brings you the same high-quality and accredited education as a conventional bachelor’s degree program. The difference is how you learn.
How Does Momentum Work?
Rather than enroll in our online classes, you work with a faculty mentor, subject matter experts and an adaptive, personalized learning platform to gain new competencies over several 16-week terms.
To get started, you and your faculty mentor create a personalized learning plan, based on your discussion of the program content, to use as you progress through your academic program. Your faculty mentor will be with you for the entire term.
For each competency you attempt, you’ll be provided with a subject matter expert (SME). The SME evaluates your pre-assessment, provides feedback and gives you personalized study content. This will allow you to prepare for a final assessment where you must show how your knowledge, skills and abilities apply in an authentic, real-world situation.
What Are the Requirements To Enroll in a Momentum Program?
Momentum is designed for students who are highly motivated and already have some expertise in their chosen career field. You may be a good candidate for Momentum if you:
- Already earned your associate degree (A.S. or A.A.) and are planning to start your bachelor’s program, or you’re earning a second bachelor’s degree for a different career
- Are willing to commit 16-20 hours per week to study
- Have on-the-job experience in your chosen subject
- Seek a more personalized plan of study than our traditional programs offer
Which Academic Programs Are Offered in the Momentum Option?
Momentum is currently available for these academic programs:
- B.A. in Criminal Justice
- B.A. in Emergency and Disaster Management
- B.S. in Fire Science Management
- B.A. in Retail Management
The university plans to expand the Momentum option to other programs.
